5 Ways to Get Unstuck

5 Ways to Get Unstuc

FEELING STUCK!

“What if you were always stuck in one place, your mind spinning and unable to go forward like tires clenched in mud, because the answers wouldn't reveal themselves to you?”

― Will Lavender, Obedience

If you feel stuck where you are, life is telling you it's time to make a change. Most of us have been there at some point of time in our life, where you feel you are rooted to a spot, and despite feeling all geared up to move in a certain direction, just not being able to do so. Holding yourself back from expressing your potential will make you feel stuck.

WHAT IS HOLDING YOU BACK?

Check whether any of the following resonates with you. Chances are that at least one of the points discussed below is the reason for you to feel STUCK.

I am not Good Enough

It is quite common to be seized with doubts about oneself, which leads you to a stream of negative self-talk:

  • Am I capable of pulling this through?

  • Do I have the necessary talent?

  • I always get so unlucky.

  • She/He has all the support, but I don’t.

Instead of wondering whether you are capable enough or have the talent, find out for your self. For example, if you always wanted to paint, but you are holding yourself back because you feel you don’t have enough skill, go and enroll yourself in a painting class and see for yourself. If nothing else, you will get to do something that you have always wanted to do! Isn’t that good to start with?

Make yourself accountable for all your actions and become your own support. You will feel great if you show yourself some love and encouragement.

Being a Perfectionist

You want everything to be perfect. You want your very first steps to be flawless

and you keep waiting:

  • for your situation to be conducive,

  • the time to be right,

  • your skills to be honed perfectly, etc.

There is nothing wrong to think this way, but it will keep you stuck in the same place till it gets too late. The best way to get better at what you want to do, is not merely to keep learning about it, but to actively work at it. The challenges you face on the way, is the best teacher. So why wait for everything to be perfect?

Seeking Validation from Others

Most of us have a deep desire to be appreciated. Instead of understanding our own self worth we use others impressions of us to build our self image, so we constantly seek approval of others because it validates us.

This trait can cause us the greatest discomfort because we will always be unduly worried about:

  • what others think of us

  • about displeasing others

  • about not moving with the pack

When you understand every body will see you from their own lens...each having their own perspective, you learn not be disturbed by others’ opinions. Know that you are worthy just the way you are. Each person has their own unique gift to share with others, and if you focus on exploring that, you will be able to develop your individuality.

Fear of Failure

Fear of failing most certainly can keep you rooted to a spot. Do any of the following fears resonate with you?

  • You may fear to fail in your attempts to move towards a bigger vision, so you rather not try.

  • You may have fear of the unknown, so you rather remain within familiar boundaries and be afraid of stepping out.

  • You may have fear of other people’s judgments of you or fear of annoying others.

Whatever they may be, fear contracts your heart and hinders you from living your best life. If a child would be scared of falling he would never learn to walk. Quoting from a poem by

William F. O'Brien.

“Life can be lived either way, but for me,

I'd rather try and fail, than never try at all, you see.”

Procrastination

Biggest reason for being stuck is the habit of procrastination- the habit of postponing action for another day. Do you habitually do any of the following?

  • Find a scapegoat for your inaction,

  • blaming it on a person, circumstance or situation.

  • Too many distractions that take you away from what you need to get done, or what you really want to do.

  • Your actions are affected by your mood swings.

  • Pushing things back to another day.

  • Allow yourself to be overcome by laziness.

If you are doing any of the above, you need to shift your attitude towards time. Instead of telling yourself there is ‘all the time in the world’, you can tell yourself ‘tomorrow never comes’. So pull up your sock and get going...
